If I were to write you a letter, this would be how it read:
Happy New Year and my best wishes for 2019. I challenge you with just one resolution (yes, only one so it really is quite difficult for you to come up with an excuse as to why you can’t do it):
Do something, anything that is an action towards getting a new job. Find an hour in your week and do a small action that means you’ve started on your change journey.
You see, when it comes to getting a new job, I frequently hear from people apologising for why they haven’t written their CV yet, or why they didn’t end up finding the time to apply to that job.
And also, based on experience, I think having loads of resolutions is a pointless exercise that usually results in failure. Hence why I’m encouraging you to think about the one simple thing that could start you off on your new job hunt.
For example, go to lunch by yourself with a pad and paper and write down all the things that you like doing, what interests you, what excites you. What charity would you want to work for if you could? And also write a list of things you don’t like about your job.
This relatively simple task, enjoyed whilst chomping on a tasty sandwich, should help you begin to think about what the future could look like. Hopefully it’s not too onerous as you’re simply putting thoughts as they come into your head down on paper.
Don’t filter them. This is only for your eyes. You could turn it into a SWOT analysis but if that feels too much like work, then don’t. Just create a list of likes and dislikes.
Then, off the back of this, you will begin to capture a sense of the kind of roles and organisations you’d like to work for. And you should feel rightly proud of yourself for starting the ball rolling. Updating your CV and applications can come later.
If the new year’s cold weather is making you feel blue, don’t put loads of pressure on yourself. Small steps.
